I love this little family and I was so excited to capture another milestone for them as they wait on their sweet baby brother’s arrival! Sam wanted a little something different for their session, and with mornings typically being the best time for Addison, we opted for a Soundside early morning session in Manteo. I told Sam they’re going to be my new poster family for “this is why you need a full session and to just go with the flow”. At almost 2, Addison is at that age. You know what I’m talking about. Having been a family photographer for 15 years, and having two kids myself, I know the feeling of walking away from your family session thinking you just experienced an epic disaster. However, if there’s one piece of advice I can give my families with kids in the 15 – 24 month age range it’s that it is bound to be an epic disaster and that’s why you just go into it with an “anything goes” mindset and trust the process. I’ve been there and it’s not fun in the moment when you’re the parents but I can promise you we WILL get photos you love. They might not all be the perfect posed portrait with all eyes on the camera, but more often than not it’s those sweet candid moments people tend to love even more.
Addison woke up the morning of their session and chose violence…but that’s ok! I’ve got one of those in my own house so it’s nothing new for me! We met up at this little gem of a spot and as I was waiting on them to arrive I looked up and saw the beautiful morning light streaming through the trees and knew we needed to use this spot for a few shots before heading out to the beach. The beach is a beautiful place but it’s also a place where kids are used to running free, and I knew once we got out there we might not be able to keep her contained. I’m SO glad we took a few minutes to start out in this spot. We headed down to the beach and most people would have consider it game over but I love a challenge. I think we got about 10 minutes in before she was soaking wet and that’s ok, because Addison playing in the water and walking with mom and dad are some of my favorites from their session. Having the extra time to let kids play and explore can really make a session and in our case it paid off big time!
