Tucked into the rolling dunes and wrapped in the golden light of the North Carolina Outer Banks, the Brunlee family’s OBX beach maternity session felt like it was pulled straight from the pages of a Nicholas Sparks novel – soft, serene, and full of heart.
There’s something magical about maternity sessions on the Outer Banks—maybe it’s the rolling dunes, maybe it’s the golden coastal light, or maybe it’s the way a family’s love feels even bigger beside the ocean. For the Brunlee family, all of that came together in the most beautiful way.
This sweet trio met me at the dunes just as the sun began to soften. Their little boy started off shy, keeping close to his dad and taking his time warming up—very much a daddy’s boy through and through. And that’s exactly why we always approach sessions with flexibility and intention. Every child moves at their own pace, and our goal is never to force a smile or rush a moment. Instead, we gently guide, give space, and let kids settle in when they’re ready.
By meeting him exactly where he was, he slowly began to open up—first a curious glance, then a tiny grin, and eventually the sweetest moments with both mom and dad. What started as quiet hesitation grew into genuine connection, and those in-between moments ended up being some of our favorites from the entire evening.
As the sun dipped lower and mom and dad wrapped her baby bump in soft coastal light, their little boy tucked himself between them with a comfort that only comes from feeling safe and seen. It was the perfect blend of maternity moments, family connection, and the anticipation of welcoming a new little one.
Sessions like this are a beautiful reminder that every child’s energy shapes the story—and that when we allow the time and space to let them open up naturally, the most authentic images follow.
