Just three of them, but a whole world of love between them.
I recently had the pleasure of photographing the Day Family during their Outer Banks vacation, and despite a less-than-promising forecast, everything came together beautifully for their Outer Banks beach portrait session.
Their originally scheduled evening session was looking pretty questionable as we watched the forecast call for wind and rain. After touching base, we decided to move their session to the morning—and I am so glad we did. We were greeted with the most beautiful morning at Coquina Beach in South Nags Head. The beach was quiet, the light was soft, and it felt like we had the entire stretch of shoreline to ourselves.
As with many of my Outer Banks family portrait sessions, we started up in the dunes before making our way down toward the water. One of the things I love most about Coquina Beach is the variety it offers. Between the rolling dunes, sea oats, wide beaches, and shoreline, it’s the perfect backdrop for timeless OBX family portraits.
Sweet little Walker was absolutely adorable. He was very serious about the whole experience and wasn’t giving away many smiles at first, but with a little patience, Mom and Dad managed to coax a few out of him. Some of my favorite images from the session, though, are the ones that capture exactly who he is right now—those thoughtful expressions, the way he snuggled into his parents, and all the little moments that make this season of life so special.
One of my favorite things about being an Outer Banks family photographer is documenting families just as they are. The tiny hand holds, sandy toes, belly laughs, and quiet moments between parents and children often become the photographs families treasure most years from now.
We wrapped up the session just in the nick of time as the first raindrops began to sprinkle down. It was one of those mornings that reminded me that sometimes a little flexibility with the weather can lead to the most beautiful sessions.
